To be successful in this as a career you will need a certain skill set and some of these skills include the following;
- Sales – It is essential that you have selling ability as that is a major factor in this job if you can’t sell then you won’t be able to make any money. There are people from all kinds of sales backgrounds that are successful in real estate but all of them have the drive and experience to make it in the industry. Although as well as having the ability to sell you will need the ability to negotiate not only on properties you will be buying but also when people are buying property from you. This is so you will be able to get the best price on a place you are buying and also make sure you don’t cut the price too much on a property your selling. It is sometimes hard to stick to a price when you have a potential buyer trying to lower your price but you need to be firm on the lowest price you are willing to accept. This is so you don’t lose money on any properties you sell so always determine your lowest possible price before showing the house to customers, push for higher don’t settle for the lowest price straight away.
- Knowledge – You will need to have good background knowledge on the area you are selling and buying in. This is so you know the best areas to buy properties in and also so you can give accurate information to potential buyers about the area.
- Trustworthy – In this industry you would need to be trust worthy if you were working independently or if you were working for a company. This is because a lot of the sales you will be handling, depending what area you work in, will be worth hundreds of thousands of pounds. You will need to be trusted to provide the customer with accurate information on the area, the property and the price of the property whilst still selling the house to them.
There are different routes you can take to gain access to this as a career both educational and work based. There are qualifications you can take to lead you into a real estate career but there are many people that enter the industry through things such as apprenticeships at a fairly young age. You would obviously have to look in more detail at the requirements for the different courses if that was a route you were planning, because different colleges have different specifications.
